The EMPH Program at UCLA is focused on key issues in health services management from both business and public health perspectives.
A Core Business Education
- Comprehensive mastery of the basic tools of business, from finance, accounting and management practice, to organizational behavior, marketing and strategy
- The application of these tools to the unique characteristics of the healthcare industry, including third-party reimbursement, public-private sector partnerships, cost-finding and rate-setting, coding and revenue cycles, and risk management
A Population-Based, Public Health Perspective
- Rigorous understanding of the political, legal, financial and economic forces that shape the healthcare systems of the U.S. and globally
- A solid foundation in public health principles, approaches and tools of analysis
Applied Field Projects
All EMPH Program participants conduct a Field Project that puts into practice the competencies gained during their first academic year.
Past projects have addressed policy development, as well as management consultation or mentored problem-solving with a sponsoring health-related organization.
Business Plan Development
EMPH Program participants also complete a comprehensive Business Plan that draws on the Program’s core business classes in marketing, applied finance and strategy.
Apply academic theory, analytical skills and business tools to develop a business plan to grow an existing entity’s operations and markets, or plan a new venture to address unmet needs in the current marketplace.
Address real-world issues and opportunities. Several successful healthcare ventures have had their genesis in the EMPH Business Plan project.
