Prospective Students
Welcome from the Director

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Some fourteen years ago, armed with an MBA and considerable industry experience, I joined the inaugural Executive MPH Class of 1997 at the UCLA School of Public Health. The healthcare industry was in full upheaval, trying to respond to the imperatives of cost-containment and the emergence of managed care. Yet executive training in healthcare management—that is, business, management and leadership training specific to the healthcare industry—was still a rarity.

Today, the business of healthcare is a multi-trillion dollar industry, spanning international borders and growing faster than almost any other segment of the world economy. And executive training in healthcare management is no longer just an adjunct to a traditional business degree, but a comprehensive approach to understanding, and mastering, the dynamic industry that healthcare has become.

At UCLA, the EMPH in Healthcare Management and Policy has grown into one of the most far-reaching training and leadership programs of its kind. It offers a rigorous, fully-accredited, competency-based curriculum that exceeds that of a full-time Masters degree program, but in a bi-weekly weekend format that is designed to meet the needs and time constraints of working professionals.

But beyond that, our EMPH Program provides an extraordinary environment in which remarkable students join with world-class faculty, an accomplished and extensive alumni network, and some of the most bold and innovative healthcare enterprises, both public and private, right outside UCLA’s doorstep. And coupled with abundant opportunities for close collaboration across UCLA’s other world-renowned professional schools, including the Geffen School of Medicine and the Anderson School of Management, the EMPH Program offers the ability to craft a uniquely tailored educational and professional experience that is unrivaled anywhere else in the world.

If you are looking for a top-tier executive healthcare training program, I invite you to take a close look at our EMPH program and its offerings. More to the point, if you are seeking intellectual challenge and analytical rigor, innovative approaches and an expanded world view, and the chance to learn and develop who you can be as a leader, I can think of no better place to pursue them than the UCLA EMPH Program in Healthcare Management and Policy.

Sincerely,
